Dr. Renee K. Harrison, Visiting Assistant Professor and Acting Director of Black Church Studies

Dr. Renee K. HarrisonProfessor Harrison teaches in the area of religious practices and practical theology with an interdisciplinary focus in West African and African American religion and culture, and Black Feminist/Womanist thought. Her work gives particular attention to the antebellum slave period. Her research interests also include the intersection of aesthetics and spirituality, and religious narratives of violence, protest, and healing. Harrison has published several articles and is currently working on two publications, Dancing Ourselves Free: Enslaved Women, Mayhem, and Terrorism in Antebellum America (forthcoming) and "I'm Beautiful and I'm Here": A Black Woman's Guide to Resistance and Healing (forthcoming). She recently completed the doctoral fellowship in Religious Practices and Practical Theology, a joint fellowship with Candler and the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University.
