Alternate Writing Sample Requirement
Eligible Applicants
This option is available to those who have been out of college for more than five more years or those whose most recent degree does not include liberal arts course work (e.g. PhD in Physics). All others must produce a recent academic writing sample from their most recent course work over the last five years.
Instructions
Write a 4-7 page critical reflection essay on the article, “Liberating Word,” 
[PDF 675KB] by Philip Jenkins. Be sure to include:
- a half page summary of what you believe the article’s main points are
- critical analysis of the content and themes of the article. Please draw in at least one outside source (the Bible, another article, book, or other intellectual resource) and use appropriate citations from that source in your reflection
- discussion of questions that the article raises for you
- appropriate citations for literature referenced within the text. For example, (Brueggeman 1982, 39) is notation for p39 of The Creative Word by Walter Brueggeman, which would be included with full bibliographic information at the end of the essay. Use footnotes only when absolutely necessary for explanatory notes. A list of reference with the full bibliographic information should appear at the end of the paper. Any style consistently used in the bibliography is acceptable so long as it includes author(s), title, place of publication, publisher, and date. Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Sixth Edition is recommended for all questions of style
Format
The academic writing sample should be
- 4-7 pages typed or computer printed, doubled-space
- in black ink, using a twelve point serif font (e.g., Palatino or Times New Roman)
- on plain white 8.5 x 11 inch paper
- with one inch margins on all four sides

For quicker download, cut and paste the link into your browser). The applicant will have access to a PDF version of the article. Applicants can download as necessary. Neither the PDF nor hard copies of the article may be distributed by Candler staff to applicants.
