Candler Basic FAQ's

Is Candler School of Theology a part of Emory University or is it a separate institution?
Candler School of Theology is one of seven graduate and professional schools of Emory, along with graduate programs in Arts and Sciences, Business, Law, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. As a Candler student, you will have access to all of Emory’s rich resources.

Is Candler only for United Methodist students?
No. Candler is one of thirteen United Methodist seminaries in the United States. While United Methodist students typically make up slightly more than half of our student body, last year Candler enrolled students from 50 other denominations.

What degrees does Candler offer?
Candler offers the Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Theological Studies (MTS), Master of Theology (ThM), and Doctor of Theology in Pastoral Counseling (ThD).

How many students are enrolled at Candler?
For the 2007-2008 academic year, there are 535 students enrolled at Candler. There are 440 MDiv, 54 MTS, twelve ThM, ten ThD, and nineteen Special Students.

What are the core values of Candler?
Candler has six core values.

Is there a strong sense of community at Candler?
Yes. Candler believes that all education, and most especially theological education, happens in context. Candler’s community of students, faculty, and staff as well as off-campus community and ecclesial ministry sites, form the context for students’ education. Candler’s Office of Student Programming coordinates all student groups, including student government, spiritual practice and student support groups, as well as special events, speakers, conversations, and retreats.
