2009 Black Church Studies Visit

Come visit Candler School of Theology to learn about and celebrate one of Candler's many gifts, our Black Church Studies Program. Monday will include a class with Dr. James Abbington entitled Music and Worship in the Black Church, followed by a casual meal with Candler faculty, staff, and students, including a dinner-talk by Rev. Dr. Luther Smith. On Tuesday you will hear from Rev. Dr. Teresa Fry Brown, Associate Professor of Homiletics and Director of Black Church Studies. During your full day on campus, you will meet faculty members and students, visit classes, attend chapel lead by our distinguished visiting preacher the Rev. Dr. Patrick Clayborn, tour the campus, and have all of your financial aid and admissions questions answered.

Class: Music and Worship in the Black Church, Dr. James Abbington
7:30-8:30 p.m. Dinner and Faculty Conversation with Dr. Luther Smith
Dr. Smith's current research focuses on the writings and correspondence of Howard Thurman, advocacy on behalf of children, and a spirituality of hope. He is the author of Intimacy and Mission: Intentional Community as Crucible for Radical Discipleship, editor of The Essential Writings of Howard Thurman and the Consulting Editor for the Howard Thurman Papers Project.

Rev. Dr. Patrick Clayborn , preaching. Clayborn is an Elder in the AME Church and a 2001 (MDiv) and 2002 (ThM) graduate of Candler. He currently teaches homiletics at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.
