Basic Graduate Theological Studies (BGTS)

Candler School of Theology is pleased to announce the offering of the United Methodist Church (UMC) program of Basic Graduate Theological Studies (BGTS) through month-long summer courses and shorter January intensives. BGTS, a UMC program of prescribed theological education of 24 or more credits (hours), already may be taken through regular semester programming. The summer courses are envisioned for:

The courses will be scheduled so that persons seeking BGTS for deacon’s orders normally may complete the required 24+ hours/credits in three years of January and June courses. Individuals needing the 32 hours/credits for elder’s orders may take longer to complete the requirements.

Those interested in the BGTS program should apply by November 1 for spring admission, May 1 for summer admission, and July 1 for fall admission as a special student (non-degree). Admission as a special student requires a bachelor of arts or comparable degree. Candidates should contact the Candler Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for a catalog and application materials at 404.727.6326 or candleradmissions@emory.edu.

The cost is $1,833 for each three hour course taken in January and Summer 2006 (plus fees). Special students (non-degree) are not eligible for financial aid from Candler, but are encouraged to apply for grants/stipends from their annual conference and through the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (www.gbhem.org). Candidates should contact their annual conference and the GBHEM directly for financial assistance.

A typical three year program might look like this:

Summer A

January A

Summer B

January B

Summer C

January C

Each summer’s course offerings will introduce students to theological study. Courses are three semester hours unless otherwise indicated. New groups of students can enter in any given summer. Student services and formational opportunities (chapel) will be available through the Course of Study.

Candidates for ordination in the United Methodist Church should consult with the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry for educational requirements for ordination.
