Our religious and civic communities stand in need of effective leaders with vision and character. Candler School of Theology is responding to this need by gathering scholars, activists, ministers, educators, and citizens of all ages to re-imagine leadership in our current context. It is important for people of faith and conscience to develop more broadly inclusive concepts of leadership firmly rooted in commitments to the common good and with the idea of working across disciplines and sectors to try new approaches. With fresh voices, new ideas, and expanded partnerships, we hope to inspire and empower people of all ages to build and lead our society into the twenty-first century.

Marian Wright Edelman, president, Children’s Defense FundMarian Wright Edelman has been a lifelong advocate for disadvantaged Americans. Under her leadership, the Children’s Defense Fund has become the nation’s strongest voice for children and families. Its mission is to "leave no child behind" and to ensure every child a "healthy and fair" start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Her writings include Families in Peril: An Agenda for Social Change; The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours; and I Can Make a Difference: A Treasury to Inspire Our Children.
Eboo Patel, executive director, Interfaith Youth CoreEboo Patel works to build mutual respect and pluralism among religiously diverse young people by empowering them to work together in service to others through the Chicago-based Interfaith Youth Core. He is the author of Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation. He holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University and serves as an online panelist for the "On Faith" blog, co-hosted by The Washington Post and Newsweek Magazine. He has written for The Chicago Tribune, The Journal of Muslim Law and Culture, and The Harvard Divinity School Bulletin, and appeared on National Public Radio.
The Reverend Richard Cizik, National Association of Evangelicals
Recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World, Richard Cizik’s primary responsibilities include setting the National Association of Evangelicals’ policy direction on issues before Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court, as well as serving as a national spokesman on issues of concern to evangelicals. He is the author of more than 100 published articles and editorials, including the landmark document "For the Health of the Nation: An Evangelical Call to Civic Engagement." Cizik was ordained in 1992 to a specific ministry calling in public affairs with the National Association of Evangelicals by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and maintains a very active preaching and speaking schedule.
