Candler conference looks at youth ministry.
Mary Elizabeth Moore, professor of religion and education at Emory University's Candler School of Theology, used her keynote address Thursday evening to counter criticisms of youth culture by listing the yearnings and hopes she finds in the current high school generation. According to her research, today's young people are yearning for religious experience, community, an understanding of the world, ethical guidance, and the opportunity to make a difference in the world. Emory graduate, Kathy Turpin, reported, Friday morning, on preliminary results of a research project undertaken with YTI 'scholars' from the 10 year life of the Summer Academy -- a four week residential program for selected high school students. After recognizing that the people coming to the summer academy are exceptional in a variety of ways, she stated that research points toward 7 important learnings that have implications for all youth ministry. Those seven learnings are: youth are formed in the community they create, open discussion of theological questions is crucial, specific content from the courses offered shapes life values, community service during the academy moves commitments to action, quiet time allows and encourages careful thought, critical thinking is encouraged, and relationships with adult mentors are important. Thomas Thangaraj, Candler professor and adult mentor during the summer academy told the conference that he has learned about his own teaching from his time with the 'scholars.' He also learned to take more seriously the journey of formation traveled by young people and that he could related effectively without having to sacrifice his adult behaviors and views. Kenda Creasy Dean, assistant professor of youth, church and culture at Princeton Theological Seminary reviewed suicide bombers and high school shootings and observed that "Teenagers are dying for God -- in every way we can imagine." She called for congregations to become sites of theological education and observed that such a program must be passionate, public, personal, in the world and must take seriously that youth are natural theologians. Roger Nishioka, associate professor of Christian education at Columbia Theological Seminary took note of YTI's 10 years of service and observed that its learnings must now be integrated into the larger story that is the Church's story.
