Candler alumna and former Director of Church Ministries Education Beth Luton 00T died July 27, 2009 after a recurrence of cancer. Memorial services will be held on July 30 at 3 p.m. (CST) at West End United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN, and on August 5 at 2 p.m. (EST) at Druid Hills United Methodist Church in Atlanta.

Candler to host Leadership Candler scholarship event
Jan. 15 application deadline

Candler School of Theology is helping make theological education affordable for the next generation of Christian leaders by hosting a special scholarship event Feb. 28-March 2, 2010.

Leadership Candler will bring together a distinguished group of prospective Master of Divinity students from across the country and the world. The three-day event includes interviews with scholarship committees, visits to classes, and conversations with Candler's faculty. Leadership Candler also features interaction with current students and staff, group discussions, and a campus tour, including time to explore Pitts Theology Library, one of North America's premier theological libraries.

Candler Produces Advent DVD Exploring Scripture, Art

Thrill of Hope Christmas CDCandler School of Theology is proud to present A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art, a new DVD production designed for use in Sunday School classes, Bible studies, and other church group gatherings. The DVD is accompanied by a participant study guide with suggested discussion questions, making it perfect for group Bible studies during Advent. Watch the preview video below.

This 50-minute DVD presents the familiar story of Christmas as told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. Each passage of scripture is illustrated and interpreted by the stunning artwork of John August Swanson along with commentary by members of Candler’s esteemed faculty, including Michael Brown, Luke Timothy Johnson, Steve Kraftchick, Tom Long, Carol Newsom, and Gail O’Day. A Thrill of Hope is divided into six 8-minute sections, each one featuring a passage of scripture from the Christmas story: The Annunciation to Mary, The Nativity, The Shepherds, Epiphany, The Presentation in the Temple, and the Flight into Egypt. Candler announces scholarships for 2010-2011

Candler School of Theology is committed to making theological education affordable and attainable. The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has announced scholarship opportunities for the 2010-2011 school year. Applicants for these scholarships should apply for admission and scholarships by the Jan. 15, 2010, priority deadline.

United Methodist prospective students who will seek ordination as a deacon or elder can apply for a variety of Candler United Methodist scholarships ranging from full-tuition to full-tuition, fees, and a $7,000 annual stipend. More than 30 of these generous scholarships are available for those entering Candler’s MDiv program in Fall 2010. In addition, there are a number of awards available to United Methodist students from specific annual conferences.

Emory’s Oxford College, Candler School of Theology Receive $4.25 Million in Gifts from Oxford College Alumnus’ Estate

Oxford College of Emory University and Emory’s Candler School of Theology have received gifts totaling more than $4.25 million from the Charles Edwin Suber Foundation.

Oxford College received a $3.35 million gift, the largest cash gift in the college’s history, and Candler School of Theology received a gift of $903,177. Both gifts were unrestricted to be used for the most pressing needs of the schools.

First Tuesday Open House Dec. 1

First Tuesday at Candler

Candler's Admissions Office has launched into the new recruitment season with a full complement of activities for prospective students, including the new event First Tuesday at Candler. On the first Tuesday of each month this fall, prospective students are invited to join Dean Jan Love, current students, and admissions advisors for a casual dinner, a talk by a faculty member, and an information session. The next event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 1.

After a great fall slate of events, Evenings with Candler will pick up again in the spring semester. Candler admissions representatives also visit several schools and congregations throughout the year. See the full schedule of visits.


Candler’s Hanging of the Greens Service Dec. 1

Join us in Cannon Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 for Candler’s annual Hanging of the Greens service in observance of the beginning of Advent. The service features Advent lessons, choral anthems and congregational hymns, and the traditional decorating of the chapel.


Metro State Choir, Saliers to perform Nov. 24 at Candler

Metro State Women's ChoirCandler School of Theology at Emory University will host the Metro State Women’s Prison choir and special guest Emily Saliers in Cannon Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the release of the choir’s first CD. Entitled Voices of Hope, the CD was recorded in Cannon Chapel in 2008. Saliers, a member of the Grammy-winning duo the Indigo Girls, provided financial backing and musical collaboration to produce the CD.

Bishop Willimon to speak at Candler Nov. 12

Bishop William H. Willimon. Photo courtesy of Duke University.United Methodist Bishop William H. Willimon will give a public lecture titled "Emerging Evangelicals Among Postmoderns: A Blessing and a Warning" at Candler School of Theology at 6 p.m. Thursday Nov. 12.

Willimon's lecture, which will be followed by a question and answer session, will be held in room 252 of the theology school building, 1531 Dickey Drive, Atlanta, 30322. The event is sponsored by the Candler Evangelical Society, a student organization. Admission is free.

Renowned Civil Rights Leader to Speak Oct. 28

Candler’s Black Church Studies program will present its annual Howard Thurman Lecture at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in CST102. The event is free and open to the public.

The Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette, distinguished senior scholar-in-residence at Candler, will present the lecture, which is named for the Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman, a pastor, poet, critic and educator. In 1953, Thurman was named by Life magazine as one of the 12 greatest preachers of the 20th century.
  
LaFayette is a longtime civil rights activist, organizer, and an authority on nonviolent social change. He co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960, and was a core leader of the civil rights movement in Nashville in 1960 and in Selma in 1965. He directed the Alabama Voter Registration Project in 1962, and was appointed by Martin Luther King, Jr., to be national program administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and national coordinator of the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign. He has authored books on realizing nonviolent change, including a community leaders' workbook, The Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation Program: Strategies for Responding to Conflict and Violence (1998).

The annual Howard Thurman Lecture is one of many events sponsored by Candler’s Program of Black Church Studies. Other activities include chapel worship, orientation, and support events as well as the annual Anna Julia Cooper Lecture and the Bishop James S. Thomas Lecture. Reformation Day at Emory 2009, Tuesday October 20: Luther and the education of youthThe 22nd annual Reformation Day at Emory is Tuesday, Oct. 20. This year’s activities are organized around the theme "Luther and the Education of Youth,” and include lectures, musical presentations, and worship, culminating in an evening concert at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Featured lecturers are Christopher Boyd Brown, assistant professor of church history at the Boston School of Theology; Jean Bethke Elshtain, Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School; and Jonathan Strom, associate professor of church history at Candler School of Theology.

A lunchtime musical presentation by Candler’s assistant dean of worship and music, Barbara Day Miller, and the Candler singers will explore hymns of education and formation. The evening’s Kessler Reformation Concert will feature the Emory Concert Choir, soloists, orchestra, and organist Sarah Hawbecker performing Bach’s Cantata 126 under the baton of Dr. Eric Nelson, director of choral studies at Emory.

All events are free of charge and open to the public.

Candler’s Fall Conference Set for October 11-13

Join us for Candler School of Theology's Fall Congregational Conference, October 11-13, where we'll explore United Methodist Bishop Robert Schnase's book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. This three-day conference is filled with practical workshops and firsthand instruction from Bishop Schnase, who weaves theological insight, practical advice, and exemplary stories to inspire pastors and laity.


Candler Welcomes New Students at Orientation

Planting Seeds for Transformation: Nearly 200 incoming students who will start their studies at Candler this fall will be on campus August 25–27 for orientation. Organized around the theme “Planting Seeds for Transformation,” the two-day event is designed to introduce new students to Candler as a theological learning community and to practices of theological reflection integral to the community through workshops, faculty panels, speakers, and worship services.

Candler Hosts Youth Theological Academy

A group of YTI students around a statue of Ghandi.Forty-nine rising high school seniors are gathering at Candler for the 2009 Youth Theological Initiative (YTI) Summer Academy, an intensive, residential program of justice-seeking theological education for young people. The academy, which takes place June 27-July 18, is held on the Emory campus and at various sites around Atlanta.

Candler Students Win National Fellowships

Three Candler School of Theology students have won prestigious national fellowships from The Fund for Theological Education (FTE). Third-year Master of Divinity student Christina Repoley was named a 2009 FTE Ministry Fellow and incoming Master of Divinity students Kimberly Jenne and Jason Myers were named 2009 FTE Congregational Fellows. Joshua CaseCandler’s Joshua Case on Winning Global Health Team
Candler School of Theology student Joshua Case served on the winning team in the recent 2009 Global Health Case Competition at Emory University.

Case, who begins his second year at Candler this fall, is a native of Tuscaloosa, AL, but he spent the six years prior to attending Candler living in Geneva, Switzerland, where he did community development work.

Karl KrogerCandler Student Wins Emory Humanitarian Award
Candler student Karl Kroger is one of six Emory students to receive the university’s 2009 Humanitarian Award. Emory president James Wagner conferred the awards on the six recipients at a ceremony in Winship Ballroom on February 3. Chosen from a pool of more than 60 nominees, Kroger was recognized for his work as an advocate for Troy Davis, a current death row inmate convicted of the 1989 murder of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.

Bishop WhiteCandler's Bishop-in-Residence Writes Letter of Joy to MLK
United Methodist Bishop Woodie W. White, bishop-in-residence at Emory's Candler School of Theology, has written his annual "birthday letter" to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with "joy beyond description." White, who served as first chief executive of the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race, has written the annual letter to King about the progress of racial equality in America since 1976.
