Letter to Martin Luther King notes major shift in U.S. ethos
Each year, United Methodist Bishop Woodie W. White writes a "birthday" letter to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. about the progress of racial equality in the United States. Now retired and serving as bishop-in-residence at United Methodist-related Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, White was the first top staff executive of the denomination's racial equality monitoring agency, the Commission on Religion and Race. King's birthday is Jan. 15, and Americans honor his memory on the third Monday of the month.

Dr. Robert Franklin Named President of Morehouse College
The Morehouse College Board of Trustees has named Dr. Robert Michael Franklin Jr. the 10th President of Morehouse College. Stone casket from "Last Tomb" comes to Emory
A burial box displaying the name of Jesus that comes from the same "Lost Tomb of Jesus" trumpeted in an upcoming Discovery Channel documentary is coming to Emory University this June. The ossuary, or stone casket, inscribed "Judah son of Jesus (Yeshua)," will be part of an exhibit at Emory's Michael C. Carlos Museum called, "Cradle of Christianity: Jewish and Christian Treasures from the Holy Land." Read more from the AJC »

Belafonte calls for action against social injustice in keynote speech
Legendary actor, musician and social activist Harry Belafonte challenged the Emory community to take action against the racial inequality and social injustices that are "deeply, deeply troubling" our society today. At the 25th annual Heritage Week banquet held last Thursday, February 15, in the Cox Hall Ballroom, Belafonte spoke to more than 120 students and faculty about the need for action to follow passion. Robert Franklin's calendar is filling up fast following the February 1 publication of his latest book — Crisis in the Village: Restoring Hope in African American Communities. The Presidential Distinguished Professor of Social Ethics at Emory's Candler School of Theology has been asked to speak about the issues raised in the book at high schools, universities, churches and, on Feb. 20, at a National Press Club forum in Washington. Thomas Long to speak at McAfee's Self Preaching Lectures
Noted preacher, lecturer and author Thomas G. Long, will be the featured speaker at the 2007 William L. Self Preaching Lectures on February 19-20 at McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University, a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship partner school. Named by Baylor University in 1996 as one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world, Long is the Bandy Professor of Preaching at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University.
