Admissions Requirements

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements vary by academic program, but all require at least a bachelor of arts, bachelor of science or equivalent degree from a regionally accredited college or university. We encourage strong candidates, including those who have been out of college for a number of years, to apply. All completed applications will be fully reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Requirements for Single Degrees

Master of Divinity

  • Bachelor of arts, bachelor of science or equivalent degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Well-balanced program of work in the liberal arts.

  • Overall grade point average of at least 2.75.

  • Bachelor of arts, bachelor of science or equivalent degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Well-balanced program of work in the liberal arts.

  • Overall grade point average of at least 2.75.

Master of Religious Leadership

  • Bachelor of arts, bachelor of science or equivalent degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Well-balanced program of work in the liberal arts.

  • Overall grade point average of at least 2.75.

Master of Theological Studies

  • Bachelor of arts, bachelor of science or equivalent degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Overall grade point average of at least 3.0.

Master of Theology

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • MDiv, or another first-level master’s degree, from a theology school accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (or an equivalent accrediting body outside the United States and Canada).

  • Grade point average of at least 3.0.

Doctor of Ministry

  • MDiv degree with a superior academic record from an institution accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (or an equivalent accrediting body outside the United States and Canada).

  • A sense of vocational identity in pastoral ministry and service to the church.

  • Three years of professional ministry experience beyond the MDiv degree.

Doctor of Theology in Pastoral Counseling

  • MDiv degree with a superior academic record from an institution accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (or an equivalent accrediting body outside the United States and Canada).

  • A sense of pastoral identity, preferably in pastoral ministry or grounded in a significant history of service in the church.

  • Significant clinical pastoral education experience (usually not less than four consecutive units), although provisional admission may be granted prior to completion of this requirement.

Note: Since this program is a joint program of three schools through the Atlanta Theological Association, a student may seek admission through any of the three. Students enroll and pay tuition through the school to which they were admitted.

Special, Non-Degree Students

  • Bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, or equivalent degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • A well-balanced program in the liberal arts.

  • A clear purpose for pursuing additional study.

  • Grade point average of 2.5.

Requirements for Dual Degrees

Master of Theological Studies and Master of Arts in Bioethics

  • All applicants must apply to Candler and to Emory's Laney Graduate School separately. If accepted to both schools, students can enroll in the dual degree program.

  • Admission to the MTS degree program follows the same requirements as noted above.

  • The Laney Graduate School requires that applicants to the MA in Bioethics take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Master of Divinity or Master of Theological Studies and Master of Business Administration

  • All applicants must apply to Candler and to Emory’s Goizueta Business School separately. If accepted to both schools, students can enroll in the dual degree program.

  • Admission to the MDiv and MTS degree programs follows the same requirements as noted above.

  • The Goizueta Business School requires that all applicants take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).

  • All applicants must apply to Candler and Emory's Laney Graduate School separately. If accepted to both schools, students can enroll in the dual degree program.

  • Admission to the MDiv degree program follows the same requirements as noted above.

  • The Laney Graduate School requires that applicants to the Master in Development Practices take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

  • Applicants to the dual degree programs in theology and public health must apply and be accepted to both Candler School of Theology and to Rollins School of Public Health. The schools maintain independent application procedures.
