2009 Fall Weekend Open House

Are you thinking about seminary, but don't really know where to start? Or maybe you know that seminary is your next step, but want to get a sense of where you would fit in at Candler. Come to our Fall Weekend Open House event on Friday and Saturday, October 16-17, 2009! Friday you will enjoy a casual meal with Candler faculty, staff, and students, including a dinner-talk by Dr. Elizabeth Bound. Saturday you will hear about Candler's degree programs, worship and spiritual life, financial aid, and housing options. Current students and Candler graduates will be on hand to help you get aquainted with the amazing community that is Candler. Join us as you explore the next steps in your journey to seminary and beyond.

Dr. Jan LoveSign-In and Greetings by Dr. Jan Love, Dean and Professor of Christianity and World Politics

Dean Love is an internationally recognized leader in church and ecumenical arenas and a scholar of world politics, particularly issues of religion and politics, conflict transformation, globalization, and ecumenism. She is known for facilitating constructive relationships among people and groups with deeply held differences and for her work in racial justice.
6:30-8:30 p.m.

Dr. Elizabeth M. BoundsDinner and Faculty Conversation with Dr. Elizabeth M. Bounds, Associate Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of Faith and the City

Dr. Bounds is author of Coming Together/Coming Apart: Religion, Modernity, and Community (1997) and coeditor of Welfare Policy: Feminist Critiques (1999). Her interests include peacebuilding/conflict transformation, restorative justice and the prison system, democratic practices and civil society, feminist and liberation ethics, and transformative pedagogical practices. Dr. Bounds is director of Faith and the City, a non-profit organization established in 1999 to encourage a sense of community throughout the 20-county Atlanta metropolitan region and bring a moral dimension to civic dialogue.

9:30-10:30 a.m. Dr. Ian M. McFarlandMorning Plenary with Dr. Ian A. McFarland, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology

Dr. McFarland's research focuses on theological method, the Trinity, Christology, and theological anthropology. His interests also include the relationship between theology and science, the use of the Bible in theology, and the thought of Maximus the Confessor. His current research is on the fall and original sin.
