The singers and instrumentalists who make up The Candler Singers are all seminary students at Candler who are preparing for ministry in the church, the academy and the world. They come from a variety of Christian denominations and from several nations, including South Korea, Canada and the United States. They lead worship weekly at Candler, represent the seminary at public events, and go on concert tours across the Southeast.
The Candler Singers have performed at a wide range of churches, regional events and denominational gatherings. They have been a featured choir in worship and in concerts during the quadrennial General Conferences of The United Methodist Church in 2004, 2008 and 2012.
The Rev. Barbara Day Miller, associate dean of worship and music at Candler, directs the ensemble. A careful worship planner, Day Miller says she is always encouraged when she hears comments from audience members that the Singers’ performance was more than a concert, but a spiritual experience.
“I think one of the reasons the choir is so compelling is because it’s obvious they believe what they’re singing—and that comes across to the audience,” she says. “It’s a time of deep and meaningful worship.”
